Beaumont, Texas, is a vibrant city located in the southeastern part of the state, about 85 miles east of Houston. The McFaddin-Ward House is a well known historic house in the community. It was built in 1905 – 1906 by architect Henry Conrad Mauer for the Averill family. Shortly after completion, Di Vernon Averill sold the 12,800 square foot home to William P.H. McFaddin. The McFaddins added a carriage house with a stable, hayloft, garage, gymnasium and servants squarters. Afer the daughter, Mamie, married, she and her husband, Carroll Ward, moved into the home. Before Mamie passed in 1982, she created a foundation to perserve the house as a museum. The museum opened in 1986. The McFaddin–Ward House is one of the few house museums in which the home’s original furnishings are intact and on display. It is also one of the few Beaux-Arts Colonial homes still open to the public.
