Located 20 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and once inhabited by the Karankawa and Atakapa Indians, the name Port Neches is believed to come from the Caddo word “Nachawi” which means wood of the bow. Grigsby’s Bluff is a specific part of Port Neches just east of Port Neches Park. It was a Native American town for atleast 1,500 years. Skeletons and other artifacts were found in burial mounds there but between 1841 and 1901, the mounds disappeared as a result of human actions. This site was also the location of the town’s post office from 1859 to 1893. Port Neches was also the site of the Second Battle of Sabine Pass during the American Civil War.

The town was incorporated in 1902 and played a crucial role in the development of the Texas oil inustry. It was home to one of the states earliest refineries, Sun Oil, Union Oil and TPC. The Museum of the Gulf Coast offers a glimpse into it’s past.

Port Neches is part of the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District, which is renowned for its commitment to quality education. The community places a strong emphasis on academic and extracurricular activities, providing an excellent environment for families. School pride is strong in this community. They honor their city’s history with a Native American school mascot. This caused a large controversy in 2020 and again in 2022 but the residents have defended their history by refusing to change the mascot.

River Front Park, also known as Port Neches Park, is approximately 27 acres with a great view of the Neches River. It also provides boat access to the river, a splash pad, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, and is home of Riverfest. Riverfest is a celebration of the Neches River, featuring boat races, carnival rides, live music, food vendors, and a parade. The first festival was held in 1950 as a way to emphasize the city’s greatest natural resource, the Neches River. Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in Port Neches with the city’s location near the Neches River and the Sabine Lake. offering various opportunities for boating, fishing, and other water-based activities.

The park also features La Maison Beeausoleil which means house of beautiful sunshine. This home was built around 1810 in St. Martin Parish Louisiana and transported via barge to Port Neches.
