Beaumont, Texas, is a vibrant city located in the southeastern part of the state, about 85 miles east of Houston. The city’s economy was significantly changed by the discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901, a historic event that marked the beginning of the Texas oil boom. Beaumont quickly became a hub for oil production and distribution. This history is preserved and celebrated in places like the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum, where visitors can step back in time to the early 20th century and experience life during the oil boom.

The McFaddin-Ward House is a well known historic house in the community. It was built in 1905 – 1906 by architect Henry Conrad Mauer for the Averill family. Shortly after completion, Di Vernon Averill sold the 12,800 square foot home to William P.H. McFaddin. The McFaddins added a carriage house with a stable,  hayloft, garage, gymnasium and servants squarters. Afer the daughter, Mamie, married, she and her husband, Carroll Ward, moved into the home. Before Mamie passed in 1982, she created a foundation to perserve the house as a museum. The museum opened in 1986. The McFaddin–Ward House is one of the few house museums in which the home’s original furnishings are intact and on display. It is also one of the few Beaux-Arts Colonial homes still open to the public.
