Small town living

Fannett, Texas is a charming and historically significant little community located about 15 miles southewest of Beaumont in Jefferson County. It’s history can be traced back to the early 19th centry when the first settlers arrived in the area. The town was named after B.J. Fannett, one of the early landowners who opened a general store in the area in the 1890s. The Japanese immigrants brough rice farming to the area. Jap Road was named after Japanese rice farmer immigrant, Yoshio Mayumi. However, in 1993 and again in 2004, the name of the road came under attack as offensive and was changed to Boondocks Road.

Relive a little history at the Clifton Steamboat Museum. This musuem is 2 stories of various exhibits showcasing wars fought in Southeast Texas and Louisiana, as well as the Steamboat Era. It also has a special area donated to the Boy Scouts with items dating back to the 1960s. Outside of the musuem, you can find the 1938 tugboat named Hercules.

Fannett’s economy has predominantly been centered around agriculture, particularly rice farming, cattle ranching, and timber production. However, in recent years, the town has seen some diversification with small businesses and services cropping up to meet the needs of the growing population. The proximity to larger cities like Beaumont and Port Arthur has also facilitated economic growth and commuting opportunities.

It is home to Fannett Cemetery which is a historical burial ground containing many early settlers. The St. Louis Catholic Church is also a historic church that has been a cornerstone of the community for generation.

Fannett, the home of the Longhorns, is served by the Hamshire-Fannett Independent School District, which includes an elementary school (Shorthorns), intermediate school, middle school, and high school. The schools in Fannett are known for their dedication to providing a quality education to the local youth.
